What is the largest news agency in Korea?
Modern Korean journalism began with the opening of Korea in the late 19th century, and it had a reformist, nationalistic flavor from the start. However, it also frequently encountered political control or outright censorship throughout the 20th century.
For example, Syngman Rhee’s government closed conservative newspapers such as Dong-a Ilbo in the 1970s and used a state intelligence agency to intimidate its advertisers. The anti-establishment newspaper Hankyoreh, founded in 1988 by dissident journalists whose previous papers had been shut down by the government, was different from other South Korean newspapers because it largely self-financed its operations and sought to be independent of political power and large capital.
During the 2000s, the Korean Internet was developing rapidly and a number of online news portals appeared. An early social networking platform Cyworld was launched, which allowed users to upload information about themselves and follow other people’s status updates. In 1995, Joongang Ilbo developed the first internet news website in Asia and since then, almost all major newspapers have websites. The Korean media are regulated by the Broadcasting Business Act and other laws. They are required to promote public interest and not infringe on other people’s rights.
